Note
Note:
Machteld Van Vliet was born in Utrecht Province in 1655, the youngest of the Van Vliet children (about seven) when she arrived in New Netherland. She was held captive by the Esopus Indians in 1663, and was released the following year after many months following a punitive exedition that included her father secured the release of all the hostages.
Machteld married first Barent Van Borsum, son of Egbert Van Borsum of New York City. She was widowed at an early age, and then married Jan Jacobson Stol, as noted in the commentary on her father, who likely was a personal friend of Jacob Jansen Stol and his wife Gertruyd Doesburg, he being a magistrate at Esopus.
